There have been many studies, and much evidence to support the benefits of natural lighting in educational settings.
In the classroom, natural daylighting improves the learning and directly impacts improving student performance. A study commissioned by the California Energy Commission found that students showed a 21% improvement in learning rates compared to students in classrooms with the least daylight.
"The Heschong Mahone Groupe analyzed test scores of over 21,000 students in multiple school districts. The study showed that students with the most daylighting in their classrooms progressed 20% faster on math tests and 26% faster on reading tests when compared to students in the least daylit classrooms."
In a North Carolina Performance Report, students attending daylit schools realized the following benefits:
a. the students in full-spectrum light were healthier and attended school 3.2 to 3.8 days more per year;
b. libraries with superior light resulted in significantly lower noise levels;
c. full-spectrum lighting induced more positive moods in students;
d. because of the additional vitamin D received by the students in full-spectrum light, they had 9 times less dental decay and grew in height an average of 2.1 cm more (over the two year period) than students attending schools with average light.
A National Renewable Energy Laboratory Report concluded that students benefit from daylighting, both in terms of increased performance and general health and well being.
